Sam’s Diamonds has grown! We are now looking to recruit volunteers. In order to support more ladies as they journey through a Cancer diagnosis we need our team to grow.
Sam’s Diamonds create a united front against Cancer, allowing women to feel empowered, moving forward with their lives and making the most out of every day. The group offers support and a shared understanding from women in the same position. The group gives that all important reassurance and peace of mind which allows women to look forward to the future. They provide fun activities, workshops and outings within a therapeutic and supportive environment; helping each other sparkle through Cancer treatment.
The group currently has referrals from Macmillan nurses, Oncology specialists and counsellors due to the positive work that we do. We were launched in December 2014. Initially the community group was set up for Widnes and Runcorn residents but has already grown with members in Liverpool, Ormskirk, Warrington and St Helens and Manchester. The Group is now a registered charity and currently has 85 women who are battling a Cancer diagnosis and need our support.
The Sam’s Diamonds volunteers are a very special group of people who come from all walks of life and have had all sorts of different experiences. They possess a wide and diverse variety of interests and skills. However, they all have one thing in common: they are passionate about helping us to reach, inform and support women and their loved ones who have been affected by cancer. Volunteers donate their valuable time in many different ways. They attend promotional events and run stalls or help in the office with admin, marketing and publicity. In addition many of our volunteers review a range of work and information we are looking to develop, helping us to reach more and more people.
We ensure that volunteers are offered the appropriate training and coaching required before taking on any role.
The impact our volunteers have on the health and motivation of our users is significant, in terms of quality of life, confidence and mindset. Feedback from our ladies includes that attendees feel less isolated, have overcome difficulties resulting from treatments, psychological battles and gained new friends in their community. They feel a sense of belonging and supported within their group. An increasing volunteer base will help us see a positive growth in the numbers we are able to reach, in more areas.
It is vital that there is a two way benefit to volunteering, and our current volunteers tell us how much they personally gain from new skills, (enabling them to give something back – often after their own cancer diagnosis) as well as gaining fresh skills and experiences that could lead to opportunities such as a new job. The time and commitment given to the charity by our volunteers is extraordinary and we work extremely hard to ensure they feel part of Sam’s Diamonds, are appreciated and in turn want to continue to support us. We absolutely couldn’t achieve what we do without them and are enormously grateful for the impact our volunteers have on our work and those we support.
